It happens with halo marines in particular. The delta series marine in particular are the worst in this case. I'd say a little in the Yankee and Sierra department but Sierra actually is extremely diverse as long as you don't have 70 alpha series only figures. With all 3 main color ethnicitys represented, heavy closed faced marines officers and hellbringer marines. With back pack and leg pouches to break up the monotony.
Yankee, I actually think looks good with the majority being the same due to color. But mixing up weapons at least is helpful to break it up a little. Plus we have flamers, officers and easy to make ODST options.

I personally love GAMS.
I love having duplicates, the more I can take pictures without worry of losing a fig (having a copy), the more I can sharpie, the more I can build a army.
I do differentiate some of my figs, using helmetless heads and hats.
Every now and then, if I get a set and a fig has a loose hand, or a mismolded head, etc etc, i focus on that fig more (customize, sharpie, etc).
I have done that with a marine defense fig and a BFTA marine.
I friggin love marines.
I would like a more transverse selection of ODST, but with the same color schemes and different paint jobs (skulls, shark teeth, stripes) on that color scheme.
